Tottenham Hotspur could make a late January deadline day transfer move for Djed Spence…
What’s the word?
That’s according to The Northern Echo’s Chief Sports Writer Scott Wilson, who delivered a fresh update on the Lilywhites’ interest in the Middlesbrough right wing-back, who is currently on loan to Nottingham Forest.
“Boro are braced for a possible Djed Spence offer from either Arsenal or Spurs. If the price was right, they’d sell,” he revealed on Twitter.
In an accompanying article, he suggests that the two north London sides are indeed interested in signing the 21-year-old defender.
Spurs are closing in on the arrival of Juventus duo Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, who are on the verge of being announced, so Spence would be their third signing of the day, if a move comes to fruition.
Conte’s new RWB?
This wouldn’t come as much of a surprise as it is a position that manager Antonio Conte is thought to be desperately seeking this month – as per The Times, he is said to have little faith in Emerson Royal, signed by his predecessor Nuno Santo in the summer and Jose Mourinho flop Matt Doherty.
The Italian head coach isn’t convinced by their ability in the final third, where his wing-backs need to thrive in order to provide the service to the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son upfront.

Spence may lack experience in the top-flight but he displayed his “unbelievable” credentials during Forest’s FA Cup win over the Gunners earlier this month.
As per WhoScored, the Boro man ranks amongst Steve Cooper’s top-five performers in the Championship so far, where he has not only averaged 1.6 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game but also 1.6 dribbles and 0.9 key passes per outing, too.
That would suggest that he’s reliable defensively and can certainly contribute in an attacking sense.
By comparison, neither Doherty nor Emerson has registered more successful dribbles, whilst they have only two assists between them in the Premier League this campaign, also via WhoScored.
“You look at one or two or the others now, Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool and Wan-Bissaka at Man United, they are all that type,” once claimed his former Boro boss Neil Warnock. “He has got enormous ability and when you have that ability it’s criminal if you don’t get to the very top.”
If Conte really wants a right wing-back, then Spence could be the very best option out there this late in the window – on the above evidence, there is certainly a gem there and the Italian is the perfect manager to polish him into a future star.
