Harry Kane is undoubtedly Tottenham’s talisman and his relentless pursuit of goals should be lauded. But his performances since returning from injury suggest he was rushed back too soon.
Although he has scored twice in three matches since his layoff – including the much-discussed shoulder-strike at Stoke – the England international has struggled for sharpness, snatching at chances, making poor decisions and losing the ball more often than usual.
Mauricio Pochettino had actually found a way of playing in Kane’s absence that had Spurs looking like a slick and fluid attacking unit, utilising the pace of Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela to good effect.
Kane has disrupted that. Perhaps the Argentine should have been bolder and benched the striker for a longer period while the makeshift attack was firing so well, but that is easier to say with hindsight.
What Pochettino must now do is work out how to get his main man firing again and there is would be no better stage on which for Kane to explode back into life than the FA Cup semi-final clash against Manchester United on Saturday.
He fielded the striker in a slightly different role during the second half at Brighton on Tuesday, using him as a number 10, just behind Son, who has greater pace to run in behind.
That’s why we asked whether Pochettino should repeat the trick against United and the majority of Spurs fans said – perhaps somewhat surprisingly – that they think it’s the way to go. Check out the full results of the poll below…
