Former Aston Villa and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has given his verdict, via his column in The Times, as to why Everton are currently struggling to impress in the Premier League.
What he said
Cascarino blamed a “lack of character” amongst the Toffees’ squad for their inability to break their current run of inconsistent form. Marco Silva’s side have lost three of their last four games in all competitions, with newly-promoted Wolves easing to a 3-1 win at Goodison Park last time out.

Cascarino told The Times: “They have spent a lot of money in the past couple of seasons and they are exactly where they were in terms of league position but with far less character in the squad than when Sam Allardyce was manager.”
Silva certainly needs to turn around his side’s form soon, for, as Cascarino concluded, the manager “has got a problem because their fans are losing faith and the people upstairs may be too.”
An issue of cohesion not commitment
The ex-Republic of Ireland forward is right about one thing, Silva’s job is on the line here. Things must improve. The Portuguese coach’s inability to address his team’s crippling weakness when it comes to defending set pieces is a real cause for concern.
It may also be true that some members of his squad lack character, but the bigger issue is that they lack cohesion. The group of players currently in place at Goodison is an amalgamation of Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and Silva signings, added to some remaining David Moyes-era veterans.
These managers, each with varying and contrasting styles, were all allowed to spend on players that suited them. Silva is now paying the price for such muddled thinking as his side don’t seem to be on the same wavelength from week to the next.
