Tottenham beat Newcastle 4-1 on Sunday, but they were lucky to finish the match with 11 players after Romero lunged in recklessly on Callum Wilson and caught the striker's ankle with his studs while he was on the ground. Referee Chris Kavanagh booked the Argentine defender and, incredibly, the VAR did not tell him to upgrade the punishment to red. The video technology has caused plenty of controversy so far this season, with every club in the Premier League having been given reason to feel hard done by at some stage, and the Romero incident will only increase calls for a change in how on-field decisions are made.

Romero was playing just his second match since returning to action following a three-match suspension earned for a challenge that saw him sent off during Spurs' 4-1 defeat to Chelsea last month. He is now just one booking away from receiving a one-game suspension for accumulation of yellow cards.
WHAT GARY NEVILLE SAID
While commentating on the match for , Gary Neville said: "He's got away with it this time but one thing is for certain it's something Spurs have got to do something about it."
Immediately after the challenge, the Manchester United legend said: "He is crazy."
WHAT JAMIE REDKNAPP SAID
After the match, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp added: "I don't think he [Romero] will learn. I think it's in him. He sees red and he goes for it. Some players you can't tame them. He's one of those, he's got that aggression. In a way that's what makes him who he is, but every time I watch him I wonder if he's either going to give away a goal or do something that could cost his team."
