Everton head to Anfield on Sunday as probably one of the Toffee teams, in recent years, who stand the best chance of walking away with three points.
And, if this Marco Silva team were to become the first Everton side in 19 years to achieve this feat then they will have to be at their very best.
But with Gylfi Sigurdsson in the team and dictating play in the centre of the pitch, Silva’s men will have a real chance to create chances against a Liverpool team whose wheels have slowly started to come off.
Apart from all the new additions that were made by the club in the summer, it was Ronald Koeman’s import of Sigurdsson from Swansea in 2017 that has proven to be the most beneficial this campaign.
The midfielder poses a real threat going forward and since moving to the number ten role under Silva, he has been able to control the line of attack with the dangerous Richarlison in front of him.
The linkup play between Sigurdsson and his wingers has also given Everton a different, creative manner of attacking with Bernard and Theo Walcott now looking for runs in behind defenders more often with the hope of picking up a through-ball by the Iceland international.
Since Silva made the adjustment in his attack with Richarlison upfront and Sigurdsson just behind him, Everton started to control possession more often in matches.
One loss in their last seven league matches have seen them climb up the Premier League table after a relatively slow start to the season.
Silva should therefore not sit back against Liverpool on Sunday and instead put his trust in Sigurdsson to have a go at the Reds’ defenders. But the 29-year-old will need Richarlison, Bernard and Walcott to also keep Jurgen Klopp’s men guessing for him to out-think them and apply pressure.
Liverpool have shown in recent matches that their defence can be broken down which would give the creative style of play of Sigurdsson an opportunity to expose them and put them to the sword.
