Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was announced that Leon King had signed a professional contract.

The 16-year-old – who was believed to be of interest to Tottenham, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig – has put pen to paper on a professional contract after a period of troublesome negotiations.

King had rejected Rangers’ initial offer, forcing Steven Gerrard to intervene in a bid to convince the teenager to stay.

The teenager’s contract will keep him at Ibrox until May 2022 – his vast potential was evident when Gerrard named him in his first-team squad for the Scottish Cup fourth round tie against Stranraer.

The Gers almost found themselves suffer a similar situation to the one which saw Billy Gilmour poached by Chelsea for just £500k, after the youngster wasn’t convinced that his future was best placed at Ibrox.

Luckily for them though, King feels that he is in the right environment to thrive with Rangers.

The Gers were knocked out of the Scottish Cup on Saturday after losing to Hearts in the quarter-final, and then suffered another defeat on Wednesday in losing 1-0 to Hamilton at Ibrox.

After being beaten by Hearts, Gerrard questioned his players’ commitment – judging by the aforesaid, it has been a turbulent week for the club, so King’s contract update is a welcome revelation.
