According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are still interested in signing Sporting winger Gelson Martins, despite the signing of Mohammed Salah.
What’s the Story?
Reports in Portugal are suggesting that Liverpool still remain interested in Gelson Martins, despite signing fellow winger Mohammed Salah.
Earlier this summer, A Bola reported that the Anfield club were prepared to spend £43.7million on the 22-year-old. Now, the same source have confirmed that Sporting have received no other offers for their young star, meaning that Jurgen Klopp is still in the driving seat regarding negotiations.
How good was Martins last season?
Arguably the best season of his young career, 2016/17 saw Martins turn out 40 times for Sporting, scoring six and assisting nine in the process.
However, what seemingly impressed watching scouts most was the youngsters ability to hold onto the ball and create attacking moves single-handedly. Martins, who is valued at £17million by Transfermarkt, also showcased his passing ability last season, from both wide areas and with link up play through the centre of pitch.
Would Martins be a good signing for Liverpool?
While Martins certainly has the raw talent to make an impact at Anfield, the sheer weight of numbers in Liverpool’s attacking midfield department makes his arrival this summer almost pointless. Players like Lazar Markovic are still plying their trade and until the club can rid themselves of a few players, Martins should and probably will stay at Sporting.
However, buying Martins during this window and loaning him back to the Lisbon club for a season may be an astute move for the future.
