According to reports in The Sun, West Ham United are ready to hand a player they released at the end of last season James Collins a one-year deal, but worryingly the offer appears to be wanted by owners David Gold and David Sullivan rather than manager Manuel Pellegrini.
What’s the word, then?
Well, The Sun says that Collins is in line for a surprise return to the London Stadium just a few months after he was deemed surplus to requirements following the expiry of his contract, having trained with Pellegrini’s first-team squad in recent weeks.
The Sun says that it is the club’s owners that are considering offering the former fans’ favourite a contract however, and they are pushing for his return after the east London outfit began the new Premier League campaign with two disappointing defeats.
Should he sign, he would compete with new boys Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena, as well as Angelo Ogbonna, for a spot at the heart of the defence, with Winston Reid still absent through injury.
Would this be a good move?
While he is a free agent and a popular figure at the London Stadium, West Ham proved they are moving into a new era by not keeping the 35-year-old on at the start of the summer, and bringing him back now would surely represent yet another knee-jerk and panicky reaction.
The Irons owners have stayed relatively out of the limelight over the course of the past few months compared to previous years, and that is how it should stay.

Old habits die hard though and it is certainly worrying if it proves to be the case that they are undermining Pellegrini in this case, proving that they once again haven’t learnt from their mistakes that alienated them from the fans in the past.
