Jose Mourinho says that Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to overhaul their squad this summer, per The London Evening Standard’s Spurs correspondent Dan Kilpatrick.
What’s he said?
Spurs are currently out of form and have lost their last three games in all competitions.
One feels that they could well do with bringing in a number of players this summer, given the clear deficiencies in the squad.
They do not have a striker to provide back-up to Harry Kane, have just one senior right-back in Serge Aurier, one left-back in Ben Davies and two defensive midfielders in Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama; the former, though, has said that he wants to play in defence, while the latter is likely to leave this summer, as he has played just 23 minutes of Premier League football.
Mourinho, though, has shot down the possibility of a major revamp of his playing squad.
Asked about that, he replied with four words: “No, not massive changes.”
And he added: “First of all, that’s not what we think we need. 2nd because of the profile of our club & 3rd because of what the market is. Year after year, it’s more difficult.
“I’m not thinking of an overhaul.”
Disappointing
If Mourinho is being totally honest here – and he may well be playing politics and saying one thing in public and another thing behind the scenes – then it is remarkably disappointing.
Spurs really do need to bring players in this summer and to list them actually feels like a mammoth task.
There are at least four players needed – both sides of the defence at full-back, defensive midfield, up front – and there are also players who will surely leave.
No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?
Think of Danny Rose, who is out on loan, Wanyama, Juan Foyth, who hasn’t been in a matchday squad in 2020, perhaps even Erik Lamela, who has played 90 minutes in the league just three times.
Whether that would constitute an overhaul is up for debate but one has to believe that there needs to be a transformational summer.
If Mourinho genuinely believes that it isn’t needed, then Spurs are in very real trouble.
Meanwhile, this man says Spurs are in a “mess”!
